Finnshifters Book One

Mikael Jarvela may only be a half shifter, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be alpha of the eastern Finland farm-turned-sanctuary his father founded. Six wolves, a red fox, a black jaguar, and a lynx all think of him as the head of the family. But Mikael doesn’t have anyone to call his own until he comes across an injured Siberian tiger in the woods.

From the moment the animal recovers and Mikael and Maxim meet face to human face, the attraction between them is undeniable. They strike up a tentative relationship, but they’re both proud men, and their egos keep getting in the way. Just when it looks like their romance is doomed, an outside threat to the family—to Mikael—forces Maxim to choose between the life of solitude he knows and the love and companionship that could be his if he stays.

This is an interesting take on the shifter life. Mikael is the son of a shifter and a human. His mother died and his father did not talk about her or what her animal was leaving Mikael with a gap in hisheart and life. His father turned their Finnish farm into a sanctuary for shifters. Mikael returned to run the farm after an absence - it his his family farm and he is the only one left.
There is a lot of detail of farm life, where there are different shifters and family units making up the larger family.
Mikael is alone and is seeking to know his animal even though, as a half of a half, he cannot shift. Every shifter than passes through the farm is a potential match to his animal so he can learn more but no-one ever matches him. In the world of cats and dogs (feline or canine) he is feline - but what kind? Then in his forest he hears the call of an injured feline, a Siberian Tiger. Maxim has lost his parents through shifters taking over their family business and burning their home. His sister was saved because Maxim had taken her to her fiance's house. He had returned home to fight the shifters and lost - they let him live. He ran and he ran into some wild wolves...real ones. He survived that encounter (just) and then ended up in the forest. He called out when, in his animal form, he smelled another tiger (a half tiger rather than a full tiger half). Mikael nursed Maxim to health, the tiger remained in tiger form to heal, allowing Mikael to sleep nestled against him for comfort. When he healed enough to turn into his human for long periods we see the love story emerge and grow.
The farm family is a solid bonded group that is threatened by a lion who comes calling, with malevolence in mind. Mikael, as a non shifting shifter is cornered and tries to protect his home, his family and his lover. He almost loses it all, and his family are angry he would jeopardise himself like that.
This is a look at a life on the farm, and as a shifter, in detail. We see what chores are needed, some of the geographical impacts on their life and some of the politics. Interestingly in this shifter world any shifter can move into your business or farm and take it and you have little recourse but to fight or flee. Humans still don't know about shifters. There is a shadowy Council but we don't see any impact of that in this book. Shifters are stronger than human, but not much, and they heal a bit faster only. We see the psychology of the human side versus the animal side. It is a well constructed world. The writing in places is stilted or formal - but it fits with the 'proper' behaviour associated with Finland I think. The descriptions of the sauna a fascinating, nothing like I have read about before. There is a whole sauna culture here.
It is a shifter story with a difference and yet it is the same. I different cultural perspective that add another layer to the genre. Really nice read.

Chuffed Finnshifters Book 1 edition by Tia Fielding Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

4.5 stars

This book was great but the ending of the epilogue made it even better. Who knew being chuffed at could be so cute? And emotional. Lol.

This was a short and easy read that had a simple but intense feel to it. I really enjoyed it because I've always loved stories that offer sanctuary homes. Add into the fact that Mikael is a half-shifter made things a little bit more interesting.

I liked the mix of all the shifters and how they were extremely loyal to Mikael even though he couldn't shift. I really liked Mikael because there's just something about him that is very appealing and charming. When Maxim came into the picture, I thought it was going to be instant mate but surprisingly it was not so that was a nice touch. Maxim had a lot to heal from and even when he was healed he needed to work things out. I really liked the fact that Maxim's pride was so easily bruised but he still maintained an aura of control.

The main conflict of the book was a bit predictable but it was entertaining seeing all the shifters on the farm come together. I really enjoyed the story but I wished it had been longer because a lot of information is told instead of shown so sometimes days/weeks/months at a time are over. I would have liked to see these things happen instead of being told of what has transpired while there was a scene break. But the world is such an interesting one with the Council and the Sanctuary. Once I started the book, I didn't want to stop. I especially liked that this was based in Finland and how the author incorporated some Finnish into the story as well. Is it accurate? I have no idea but it sounded good. LOL

Overall, I loved the book. It is easily something I could reread and I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series because I'm curious who will show up next and who will get their HEA next.
Writing was immature, the characters tho had some saving graces. just way to underdeveloped for my senses. I thought the insta love factor and other parts of the story strange, off putting in some degrees, and I'm sorry to say just darn juvenile. there wasn't intenstity or slow build up. story was flat if a good idea, typos were few, but the story never sang, mb it was just me but tho the characters were around 25-40 they acted much younger [ middle schoolish \. fair first effort but if not for the sale I wouldn't have ever tried. it. cant truly recommend it either.
